Once adopted, the Directive will oblige EU Member States to implement its provisions within two years. In the currently proposed version of the Directive, some of these provisions include: - Establishing targeted and effective intervention programmes to prevent and minimise the risk of committing offences of violence against women or domestic violence, or reoffending.
- Including intervention programmes as part of tertiary prevention against reoffending.
- Including perpetrator interventions in essential services during times of crisis, including health crises (e.g. Covid-19).
- Developing minimum standards for intervention programmes in accordance with best practices
Having lobbied actively for these provisions in the proposed Directive, we hope many of them will make it through the negotiation process. It is crucial that this Directive be adopted and then swiftly implemented, including strengthened sentencing rules and robust rehabilitation programmes. Only by doing so can we ensure justice for survivors, prevent future acts of violence, and promote a society that values respect, empathy, and equality.
